located in the rocky desertification area, aihua village in south china's guangxi zhuang autonomous region had suffered poverty for generqations due to lack of water. after discovering abundant underground water sources in the nearby mountains, villagers spent four years digging a mountain tunnel for water diversion. in 2018, the local government launched a large water supply project for aihua village and 17 other villages, benefitting more than 4,000 villagers. guangxi zhuang autonomous region, home to the country's largest ethnic minority population, has lifted all its 54 poverty-stricken counties out of poverty, the regional government announced on friday. since 2016, nearly 73 billion yuan (11.11 billion u.s. dollars) have been allocated to poverty alleviation projects across the region, covering fields of infrastructure, employment, education, and medical and healthcare services.
