between the years 460 and 465, a monk named tanyao, along with 10,000 craftsmen, carved the first five caves into a 1-kilometer ridge. and the yungang grottoes were born! the buddha statues in the first five caves were equated with the first five emperors of the northern wei dynasty (386-534).
